Letter to Voters from Redfield Proctor Jr., 1922

Letter from Vermont gubernatorial candidate Redfield Proctor Jr. to voters, dated Proctor, VT, September 4, 1922, one week before the primary election reminding them that "every citizen, man and woman, having the right to vote, has with that right the duty to vote." This appeal to women voters is significant given that the 19th Amendment had only been in place for two years and was ratified in Vermont just one year prior. Proctor urges voters, "whether you are inclined to vote for me or not" to carefully examine the qualifications of each candidate and select the one "best fitted" for the office. "In any event," Proctor concludes, "go to the polls and conscientiously cast your vote for somebody. This is your duty as a loyal Vermonter." Proctor would go on to win the election. He served as Governor of Vermont from 1923-1925.
