Title
Campaign Poster for M.J. Hapgood, 1923
Description
Campaign poster for United States Senate candidate M.J. (Marshall J.) Hapgood of Peru, Vermont. Hapgood was a longtime member of the state legislature. Hapgood was especially known in the legislature for having crafted an act that would require new text in a proposed amended law to be printed in italic type, allowing for easy comparison and saving the state a significant amount of money. A forester and timber trader, Hapgood was an avid supporter of public lands and opponent of cigarettes, due to their role in starting forest fires. Receiving only 248 votes, Hapgood lost this special election to Porter H. Dale.
