Materials from the Agan Club of Ludlow promoting Frank W. Agan's candidacy for the Republican nomination for Governor of Vermont in 1920. Included here are two leaflets and an envelope. The envelope [9 x 16.5 cm] is addressed to Harold Goddard Rugg, (Dartmouth) Hanover, N.H. and is postmarked May 29, 1930. The return address lists Allen D. Ball as the club's secretary. Printed along the bottom is a quote from Agan: "For the present, I intend to advocate the return of their personal rights to all the people of Vermont. I believe they are capable of self-government." The smaller leaflet [17.5 x 7.5 cm] outlines Agan's platform, listing issues he supported (personal liberty, improved road planning) and opposed (minority rule, prohibition). An indentation and two holes in the paper suggest a button had once been attached. The second leaflet [22 x 14 cm] elaborates further on Agan's position regarding prohibition, seeing the 18th amendment as a federal incursion of the autonomy of individual states. The text points to Ludlow's rejection of saloons as an example of productive local governance. These materials were likely sent to Rugg, a librarian and collector, upon his request.
