Hancock and English Clubs of Montpelier, 1880

Invitation to a special meeting of the Hancock and English Clubs of Montpelier, Monday, August 30, 1880. Winfield Scott Hancock and William H. English ran for President and Vice President on the Democratic ticket in the 1880 election. The invitation is dated August 28, 1880 and is addressed in ink to M.D. Gilman, Esq. Marcus Davis Gilman was a former Democratic member of the Vermont House of Representative, as well as the librarian of the Vermont Historical Society. The invitation was issued by the club's secretary, Charles E.H. Moore. Printed inside the folded invitation is a letter from Argus and Patriot newspaper founder Hiram Atkins urging the recipient to attend because "time is getting very short and there is a great deal to do." He continues, "Hancock is going to be elected, and we each ought to have a share in the triumph, and this the way to get it in Montpelier. Please be there." Vermont's five electoral votes went to Republicans James Garfield and Chester Arthur, the winners of the national election.
