Flag Raising by the Supporters of Hancock and English, 1880

Poster for a flag raising by the supporters of Democratic candidates for President and Vice President, Winfield Scott Hancock and William H. English. The event took place in Montpelier on Saturday, July 3, 1880. Among the confirmed speakers, the poster lists Colonel A.M. Waddell of North Carolina, Chairman of the Post Office Committee in the last Congress, and General W.F. "Baldy" Smith of New York, as well as music by the Montpelier Cornet Band. The poster also includes instructions for traveling to the event via the Montpelier and Wells River Railroad and the Central Vermont Railroad. Vermont's five electoral votes would go to the Republican candidates, James Garfield and Chester Arthur. Alfred Moore Waddell served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1870-78 and was an outspoken white supremacist who later led a violent uprising against the Black population of Wilmington, NC. William Farrar "Baldy" Smith was a general in the Union army during the Civil War and served on the New York City board of police commissioners at the time of this event.
