Letter from the Democratic State Committee, 1852

Democratic State Committee

Democratic State Committee circular, dated Montpelier, October 25, 1852 regarding the upcoming presidential election between Democrat Franklin Pierce and Whig Winfield Scott. Addressed "Dear Sir," the five writers implore the reader to do everything in their power to prevent a "humiliating" defeat of the Democratic party in the state of Vermont. They acknowledge the inevitability of the state's electoral votes going to Scott, but call for a "FULL VOTE" of Democrats, which will "encourage and strengthen the party, while a meager and scattering vote will serve to weaken and dishearten." This copy of the letter was sent to Loyal C. Kellogg, a lawyer in Benson, who would later serve on the Vermont Supreme Court from 1859-66. The circular was addressed to Kellogg directly on its verso, which is postmarked "Burlington, Vt., Oct 29," stamped "PAID," and marked Rec'd 30th Oct'r 1852.
