Reprint of New York Times editorial published October 8, 1923 in support of M.J. (Marshall J.) Hapgood's candidacy for United States Senate. The editorial celebrates Hapgood's friendship with Theodore Roosevelt. A forester and timber trader, Hapgood was an avid supporter of public lands and opponent of cigarettes, due to their role in starting forest fires. Receiving only 248 votes, Hapgood lost this special election to Porter H. Dale.
