Uncut Union Tickets, 1863

Uncut sheet of four tickets for the Union Ticket in the Vermont state and Rutland County election. The Union Party (or the National Union Party) was the name adopted by the Republican Party amidst the Civil War. All three of the statewide candidates, John Gregory Smith (Governor), Paul Dillingham Jr. (Lieutenant Governor), and John B. Page (Treasurer), won their races. On the county level, the ticket included the candidates for Senators (Merritt Clark, Nathaniel Fish, and William T. Nichols), Assistant Judges (Barnes Frisbie and John W. Ainsworth), State's Attorney (Jerome B. Bromley), Sheriff (William M. Field), High Bailiff (H.O. Brown), and Judge of Probate (C.M. Willard). At the bottom of the sheet are eight listings for Frederick E. Woodbridge, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, which would have been cut apart and used to vote within Vermont's First Congressional District.
