Title

Fraud! Fraud! Fraud!, 1844

Description

Circular published by the Sentinel & Democrat, Burlington, November 2, 1844. The text, a letter addressed to Fellow Citizens, cautions of a voter fraud scheme reportedly planned by the Whig party of New York, whereby Vermont citizens living near the states' border would be enticed to vote illegally in the New York state election to be held on November 5, 1844. The writers "raise a 'midnight cry' to warn our Fellow Citizens to promptly expose any offer of bribes which may be held out, to induce any citizen to commit an act, which may entail infamy and disgrace on himself and our State." They call for equal vigilance in overseeing the Vermont election to be held the following week, concluding "The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance."
