Description
Bernie Sanders, mayor of Burlington, announced his candidacy for Vermont governor in May 1986, challenging Kunin after her first year in office and creating a three-way race with Republican Peter P. Smith. Kunin narrowly won the popular vote with 47%, Smith 38.2%, and Sanders 14.4%. Because no one received 50% vote, the election was settled by the legislature, with Kunin declared the winner.
