Beard & Bailey State House Desk
Title
Beard & Bailey State House Desk
Description
Desk #145 from the Vermont State House, now part of the collections of the Vermont Historical Society, was used by both Edna Beard and Consuelo Northrop Bailey.
Beard chose the desk at random, at the beginning of her first term as the first woman to be a Vermont state legislator. Contemporary accounts describe desk #146, next to her, as remaining empty for some time until another legislator chose it among cheers and jeers.
Bailey, nearly a half-century later, chose desk #145 not because of its association but because it was the desk her father had used as a state legislator. The fact that the same desk belonged to two of the most important women in Vermont's political history is therefore purely a fun coincidence.
