Description

Berlin mills, as seen from the Washington Courthouse tower, c. 1871. The buildings on the far side of the Winooski River were in Berlin when this photograph was taken. The steeple of Christ Church is seen in the foreground. A railroad bed and bridge abutments are under construction at the mouth of the North Branch. Berlin’s district 5 schoolhouse can be seen just below the open field in the upper left. This is how the short street between Berlin St. and Prospect St. got the name of School Avenue.
