Oral history interview with Joy Worland
Title
Oral history interview with Joy Worland
Description
Joy Worland discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on her work interacting with public libraries in Vermont and her experience as a professional musician. In particular, she relates her observations of how musical performances with groups like the Vermont Symphony changed. Her role at the Vermont Department of Libraries involves coordinating continuing education for staff at local libraries and she describes how pandemic closures of libraries increased demand for staff time to be put toward continuing education. She explains their efforts to quickly learn how to improve online continuing education and also touches on the Vermont Department of Libraries' transition to working from home in 2020. More personally, she reflects on her children's school experiences of finishing high school and attending college during the pandemic. She also speaks about how she and her family spent their free time and contrasts her experience in Vermont with that of counterparts in other states.
Joy Worland of Montpelier, Vermont, joined the Vermont Department of Libraries around 2018 as their Library Consultant for Continuing Education and Small and Rural Libraries. She was president of the Vermont Libraries Association from 2017-2018 and previously served as library director at the Joslin Memorial Library in Waitsfield, Vermont, and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont. Before moving to Vermont in 2009, she worked at the University School of Nashville library. She is also a professional musician who plays the French horn.
