Title

Oral history interview with John Sayles

Description

John Sayles discusses his work as CEO of the Vermont Foodbank during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing in detail how the Foodbank responded to growing levels of food insecurity in the state. At the start of the pandemic, they utilized connections and resources at both state and federal levels to gear up for providing more food throughout the state. They also implemented measures to keep workers, distribution centers, and clients safe. Sayles explains how many changes made in response to COVID, such as drive through pick-up, were positive adjustments that have remained in place post-pandemic. He describes how the Foodbank supported its employees, who were considered essential workers, through sick leave, increased salaries and bonuses, and programs focusing on emotional wellness. Being in Vermont was perceived to be positive since the state's small size made coordination of services and communication easier. Sayles also observes how the Foodbank benefited from the fact that many leaders (including him) were well known and had strong working relationships with other key stakeholders. On a personal level, Sayles notes that his life was not greatly impacted by the pandemic since he and his wife continued to work, and his teenage son was already doing online learning before 2020.

John Sayles of Montpelier, Vermont, became the CEO of the Vermont Food Bank in 2009. He had previously served in various senior positions in state government, including as the deputy secretary for the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.
