Speaker Jill Krowinski discusses the Vermont House of Representatives' transition to virtual sessions at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and back to in-person sessions afterwards. She also shares her memory of the January 6 United States Capitol attack, during which she was at the Vermont Statehouse to be sworn in as Speaker of the Vermont House. She mentions the experience of her husband, Tim Farbisz, as a healthcare worker at the at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, as well as steps that she took in her personal life to cope with the pandemic.
Jill Krowinski was elected as the 92nd Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives in 2021. She first became a member of the Vermont House when she was appointed by Governor Peter Shumlin to fill a vacancy in February 2012 and was elected to a full term later in that year. As a member of the Democratic Party, she served as majority leader from 2017 to 2021. She was also the executive director of Emerge Vermont (a political leadership training program for Democratic women in Vermont) from 2019 to 2021.
Krowinski moved to Vermont after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 2002 and worked on campaigns for 21st Century Democrats. In 2005, she was the top aide for Gaye Symington (Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives from 2005-2009). She was also field director for Peter Welch's United States House of Representatives campaign in 2006. Previously, she was also vice president of education and Vermont community affairs at Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and a member of the board of commissioners for Fletcher Free Library in Burlington, Vermont.
