Why the State of Vermont possesses a national flag that belonged to the Sharpshooters remains a mystery. One plausible story is that the final commander of the regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Homer Stoughton was from Vermont. Upon the expiration of his enlistment in January, 1865, Stoughton might have brought the color home with him. The flag is designated 3rd Vermont Sharpshooters, which was the other title given to Company H. 2nd U.S.S.S., for it was the third such company raised in the state. However, it was an unusual practice for companies to carry their individual national color.
