Houston-Judkins-Metcalf-Clough Blocks Fire
Title
Houston-Judkins-Metcalf-Clough Blocks Fire
Description
On December 23, 1928, a raging fire destroyed several buildings on the north side of Northfield's Common. Firefighters from Northfield and Montpelier fought the blaze in minus 10 degree temperatures. Apartments, as well as many viable businesses, were destroyed, including a bowling alley, restaurant, tailor shop, and barber shop. In the morning, the ruins shimmered with icicles. This had been one of 11 fires which destroyed buildings in town between 1925 and 1929. Many people wondered where and when the next fire would happen!
