Brown Public Library
Title
Brown Public Library
Creator
Hugh C. Leighton Co., Portland, Me.
Description
Built in 1906 at a cost of $25,000, Northfield's only public library building was named after its principle benefactor, George Washington Brown, a Northfield native who eventually became a very wealthy man as a high official of the United Shoe Machinery Co. in Boston. The library's design is certainly "classic," and the bull's-eye windows are also very unique. Northfield had library services prior to the building's construction, but now the library and its services were truly "public." The "BPL" still stands today, with an addition added in 1999.
