Description
Regimental flag of the 2nd Vermont Infantry Regiment.. Blue silk with twisted, hand-attached gold cotton fringe and blue and white cords with tassels. Obverse has painted banner reading "2nd Regiment Vermont Volunteers" over variant of state coat of arms (half is stars & stripes). Painted banner below seal reads "Freedom and Unity." Originally tied to staff, flag was tacked to staff at the time of its removal from exhibit. Place issued: New York, N.Y. Date issued: 06/20/1861. Presented by the Sons of Vermont (Vermonters residing in N.Y.C.) to the 2nd Vermont on June 20, 1861. The flag would have been sent on to Montpelier when the regiment mustered out in July of 1865.
