Description

Regimental flag of the 9th Vermont Infantry Regiment. Blue silk with Vermont coat of arms painted on obverse and bald eagle with shield reading "9th Regiment Vermont Volunteers" on reverse. Has extant gold silk fringe, gold hand-knotted cords and 6 ties (for attaching flag to staff). Staff has "whale's tail" finial. Date issued: 1865. Made for 9th Vermont Infantry (their first flag was captured at Harper's Ferry). This flag would have been sent to Montpelier when the battalion was mustered out in December, 1865.
