Description
Lithograph by John Henry Bufford of the floor plan of the entrance story of the third Vermont State House drawn by Thomas Silloway in 1857. The first Vermont State House was a three-story wood frame building completed in 1808 that was determined to need expanding in the late 1820s. The second Vermont State House was constructed from Ammi Young's designs between 1833 and 1838 and was a two-story building with a low saucer dome and Doric portico that used Barre granite for much of the exterior. In January of 1857, most of the second Vermont State House was destroyed in a fire, including the interior and dome, though the portico and some of the granite walls survived.
