Keel of the Congress at Chimney Point

Title

Keel of the Congress at Chimney Point

Creator

Perry, George W.

Description

Photograph of the keel of the USS Congress at Chimney Point in Addison, Vermont. By the time this photograph was taken, there had been five ships that had carried the name USS Congress (in 1776, 1777, 1799, 1841, and 1868). Given the location where this photo was taken, it is highly likely that this is the keel of the 1776 USS Congress, which was a row galley that served as the flagship for Brigadier General Benedict Arnold during the Battle of Valcour Island. The Congress suffered extensive damage during the fighting, forcing Arnold to scuttle the ship.
