Description

Text continues: "400,000 orphans starving, no state aid available--Campaign for $30,000,000." Poster shows a child wearing a scarf on her head.

The American Committee for Relief in the Near East (founded as the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, and today known as the Near East Foundation) was formed in 1915 in response to reports of genocide against Armenians during World War I. Later in the war, it expanded its aid efforts to the countries listed here, and today supports development and relief in over 40 countries across the region. It's the earliest American example of organized citizen philanthropy -- fundraising specifically to aid refugee populations overseas. The committee used poignant imagery, celebrity spokespeople, and a wide variety of media outlets to transmit its message to the American people.
