254 Elm Street, Dennis Lane House
Title
254 Elm Street, Dennis Lane House
Creator
Carnahan, Paul
Description
The beautifully ornate French Second Empire style home at the corner of Elm and Vine Streets was the proud home of Dennis Lane, president of the Lane Manufacturing Company. Lane’s house was on a prominent Montpelier thoroughfare where it could be admired by passers by, yet was within easy walking distance via a pedestrian bridge to his factory on the other side of the North Branch. Notice the patterns in the slate on the Mansard roof, the decorated frieze board under the overhangs of the roof, and the iron filigree at the crests of the roofs. This photo of this circa 1880 house was taken in 1891, three years after Lane’s death in 1888 at age 70.
