Description
Extra from the Vermont Patriot & State Gazette, published in Montpelier, dated Friday, October 28 [1853]. The extra announces the selection of John S. Robinson as the state's Governor. Robinson (Democratic), ran against Erastus Fairbanks (Whig) and Lawrence Brainerd (Free Soil Democratic) in the general election. Because none of the candidates received a majority of the votes, the election was decided in the General Assembly. The extra is illustrated by a woodcut of the State House as it existed prior to its destruction in an 1857 fire. A version of this extra was subsequently printed in the Vermont Patriot & State Gazette on November 2, 1853.
