Description

Extra published by the Vermont Patriot & State Gazette, Montpelier, November 1852 updating the public on initial returns from the 1852 presidential election between Franklin Pierce (Democrat) and Winfield Scott (Whig). "Democracy Victorious! That Arsenal LOCATED!! The whig defeat has become a perfect rout--the whigs are annihilated!" Listing the states whose electoral votes were secured by each candidate, only Vermont and Massachusetts favored Scott. The anomalous results of these two states is emphasized by the unique vertical printing of their names. Florida, Tennessee, and Delaware had yet to be called at the time of printing, "with chances in favor of Pierce. We have'nt the heart to add a word."
