5th Vermont Infantry Regiment National Flag (Presentation)

5th Vermont Infantry Regiment national flag (presentation). Attached to staff by ties. There are 34 gold painted stars arranged in a circle around a gold eagle, all within the canton. The gold eagle is holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Its beak holds a red scroll bearing the motto, "E Pluribus Unum." The national shield is displayed on the eagle's breast. On the seventh stripe "5th regiment Vermont" is displayed. Place of issue: St. Albans, Vt. Date of issue: 09/16/1861. When the 5th Vermont was mustered into service on September 16, 1861, it received one color-a national flag with an ornately painted canton. The color had been ordered through the Vermont Quartermaster General George Davis upon the direction of Governor Erastus Fairbanks.
