Description
1st Vermont Cavalry regimental flag. The new Vermont Quartermaster General, Perley Pitkin, corresponded with Charles Eaton about new flags for the cavalry. On January 29, 1865 Eaton forwarded the two colors to General Pitkin. On the flags arrival in Vermont, they sat in the Quartermaster General's office. On April 24, Washburn received a short note from the commander of the 1st Vermont Cavalry, Major William Cummings. The major penned, "I would respectfully request that our Colors may be sent us at Petersburg Va by Express at the earliest possible convenience..." The flags arrived by Express the day of the Grand Review of the Army of the Potomac through Washington, DC, May 23, 1865.
