Description
4th Vermont Infantry Regiment national flag. Attached to staff with by sleeve. Fringe present. Canton style is rectangular, and is 24 in by 38 in. The stars are gold painted and arranged in a double ellipse. The stripes are extremely faded and measure 5.5 inches wide. Before the commencement of the 1864 campaign the first national was returned to Vermont and a replacement national was issued. On June 23, 1864, a large percentage of the 4th and a battalion of the 1st Vermont Artillery were forced to surrender to the Confederates of Ambrose Powell's Third Corps. However, the colors escaped captured. When Sergeant James Drury headed north on his well-deserved furlough, he carried the national color of the 4th Vermont with him. He brought it to Woodstock and the press recorded the flag's presence.
