5th Vermont Infantry Regiment National Flag

5th Vermont Infantry Regiment national flag. Attached to staff by sleeve. The canton is rectangular, and is 25 x 37 inches. There are 34 gold painted stars arranged in a double ellipse. The stripes are faded, and only ten remain. The stripes are 5.5 inches wide. The flag also has fringe. The 5th Vermont sent their old national colors to Montpelier and ordered a replacement through the Federal Quartermaster Department. The new national flag bore thirty-four stars arranged in a double ellipse. Horstmann Brothers had supplied it to the quartermaster through a federal contract. The national issued in 1864 was battered. Over a third of the fly measurement was missing as well as the bottom three stripes. This flag may have been replaced while the unit sat behind the Petersburg entrenchments.
