Theatorium in the Old Village Hall

Situated at the bottom of Central Street, near Depot Square and the train station, this building was many things: village hall, fire station, jail, theatorium, meeting place and even a lyric theater. The building is older than 1908, but we date this photo to about that time due to the sign hanging over the front porch. The building was even the site of an 1899 preliminary hearing for a murder, which occurred in Northfield in 1896. Seems that George Marsh was found dead, with the prime suspects being his wife and the "hired man," William Buzzell. They were both convicted, but the death by hanging was commuted to life imprisonment. Neither served very long, Mrs. Marsh dying in 1905 and Buzzell being released into the custody of a friend. The building still stands today, although not in good repair. It is currently in private hands.
