What Vermont town is without at least one church? Northfield has several, and this is just one, St. Mary's Episcopal Church located on Main Street. According to author Jane Bryant in her article about the history of the church in our newsletter, the Dog River Crier, "Episcopalians have worshipped in this space since 1856 when those few who had been meeting in offices, homes and other churches bought a fourteen-year-old church building at auction for the grand sum of $400. They moved it from its Winter Street locale to their half-acre site on South Main Street at a cost of $400. The land cost them $500 and repairs $300. The grand total for a house of worship in those days: $1600." The church is still active today. Note the hand-painted street sign (Elm St.) tacked to the large tree on the right side of the picture. Today there is a large circular drive in front of the church.
