Title

Horses Pulling Load by Spaulding High School

Description

The photo shows a wagon and a horse team pausing during the ascent of Washington Street in Barre. The load on the wagon is the roof stone of the George B. Milne mausoleum. This mausoleum was erected on Elmwood Cemetery in 1917 a few hundred yards uphill from the place this photo was taken. Transporting the heavy stones used in the construction of the George B. Milne mausoleum proofed to be very challenging. The roof stone was the final stone of the mausoleum. It was transported on a heavy wagon with 10 horses pulling it uphill. The transport went fine and was finished within a few hours on the afternoon of August 28, 1917. Previous loads had been transported on rollers and it sometimes took several days to cover the circa 800 - 900 yards from the unloading site behind the post office in Barre to the construction site on Elmwood Cemetery.

The thin blankets covering the horses’ backs are burlap anti-fly blankets. These blankets, which were used as advertising media for Reynolds & Son Hardware Store, were intended to protect the horses against flies.
